Tasting Journey #75 - HK Trip -

Business trip to HK for 3 days, and we had to take advantage of the time to enjoy some great food.

Known for 絲襪奶茶, had to try it. I cant really tell how this is better than other places but it's still decent milk tea.  I was told that back in the days, this is the place to go for those who are looking to skip work for a few hours.  Reason being that the food service is extremely fast, and that you can have a quick afternoon tea away from the office if needed.

Located near TST, this place was recommended by a local HK-er.  He said that this is very local HK dinner.  It was packed even on a weeknight. He said that to come on a weekend is literally impossible, not to mention poor service on top of even poorer service.
When we sat down and saw the menu options, we were surprised. It is westernized breakfast food.  I guess it's expected since HK used to be a British colony and hence such strong Western presence. However, I wasn't expecting a western breakfast to turn into an Asian dinner. hahaa... nonetheless, it was still an interesting experience.  Food was OK.

After dinner, we headed over to this place for dessert. Apparently, this dessert parlour originated from Macau - a place with Portuguese influence.
I had the 雙皮燉奶 and our local guide had the 薑汁燉奶. I have to say that if you are not a fan of dairy, I reommend getting the ginger version since the flavour of the ginger covers up the taste of the dairy, but at the same time you still get the rick creaminess flavour of the dairy.

MTR station, this is a local dessert parlour that serves just sticky ball dessert.
I ordered the sesame ball in sesame paste.  All I can say is - it's sooooo sesame. You have to be a real sesame lover to order this, else I suggest ordering a different paste base with sesame ball.

一點心
Again, located near 砲台山MTR station, this is a chain dim sum store that offers tasty dim sum.
This is a Michelin 1-star restaurant worth trying out!

Tasting Journey #74 -

02.23087332

A local eatery that serves Taiwanese dishes.
We arrived just before noon, and the restaurant wasn't busy, though with a constant in/out-flow of customers.  As soon as noon hits, it's like as if a storm hit - a constant influx of people, occupying every chair and table that is vacant in the restaurant.  I guess it's popular for a reason.

There's not too many selection on the menu, but given how busy it is, I would assume that the food must taste great.  Its most famous dish is the 魷魚羹 (squid thick soup), which I didn't think was that great.  On the other hand, the rice noodle (炒米粉) and the rice with pork (滷肉飯) was awesome.

I love rice noodles, and my mom makes killer-ass rice noodles.  I've tried many rice noodles in the past, and I did notice that their rice noodle is made with a bit more oil (most likely lard of some sort) than typical.  Pleasant but noticeably greasier, but not in the negative sense that there's a puddle of oil sitting at the bottom of the bowl.

Rice with pork is enjoyable as well.  I don't typcially order this kind of dish, though as much as I love how tasty it is, it is literally, a straight up shot of fat and carbs.

Overall, I would say that the food is good, and that I would definitley stop by for a quick grab if I'm in the area, but not worthy of traveling all the way just for this.

Café & Meal
04.2259.8957
http://yuanyecafe.com.tw/locati.html

Spacious, well-lit café in Taichung that offers light snacks and drinks.
Although it claims it is a café, it definitely doesn't specialize in coffee since 90% of the drink menu is a latte of some creative sort. So if you're not a high-expectation coffee drinker, then this is an option if you're looking for a chill afternoon to hang out with friends.

Tasting Journey #72 -

04.2258.0196
http://www.gooddays.com.tw/find.html

Like most restaurants in Taichung, 好好 restaurant is comfortable, spacious, and serves as a good afternoon place for chit chats with girl friends.

Food is acceptable. Price is a bit on the higher-end cosidering that this is Taichung, a city known for competitive eateries.  Still acceptable though, per Taipei standard.

Not a lot of food selection on the menu, but one drink is worth mentioning - yam latte.
Interesting, and filling, like a pumpkin creme soup. I would probably consider it more like a soup dish, and not a drink on-the-side.
